Ripley County Memorial closed in October of 2018. SoutheastHealth announced that spring it was leaving, the board spent thirteen months trying to find somebody to take the hospital over, and in June of 2019 they voted to dissolve it. It has not reopened.
Missouri Highlands opened the Doniphan Family Clinic while that was going on. They are on Leroux Street, weekdays eight to four thirty, primary care and behavioral health. So day to day, there is care in town. Anything that needs a hospital means a drive.
In most towns, choosing a Medicare plan is mostly about the doctor you already have. In Ripley County it is also about the hospital you would end up at. Poplar Bluff, most likely, and possibly further. That is not a hypothetical. It is the question, and it is the one a website comparing premiums will not ask you.
